Unlike .com the .org system allows you to monetize your blog. Meaning you can place ads or affiliate links to any products you so choose, allowing you to turn your writing into an income. This is probably the biggest advantage of .org. You see when you host it yourself you basicly have full control over it but with .com you are at the mercy of there rules.
With .org you can have your own domain name where as with .com part of your domain name will be basicly an advert for WordPress. This is true of all the the blogging systems that provide free hosting. You can often pay extra to have your own personal name but if so why not just get .org.
You cannot upload new plugins to .com to enhance your blog. Considering there are thousands to be had then you are missing out on a lot of fun. ( Plugins are applications designed to help you get the best from your blogging experience).
Only in .org can you have access to the files, allowing you to mess around with the code. In .com there is no such access. Although messing with the code will require knowledge this knowledge is not hard to come by even if you have to pay someone.
Because of the plugin situation using .org really allows you to optimize your blog for search engine ranking. Meaning in .org you will be able to reach that mecca called “First Page” a lot easier.

Of course Using WordPress.org is not perfect.
