Websites compete for our attention with breaking news, blogs, “feeds” and hot online videos, on every possible topic – and the flow of information never stops. It’s a real challenge to make your article stand out, and get a web page under a readers nose, let alone “go viral”.
When someone lands on your website, or clicks your article link, there’s a precious opportunity to provide the information they are looking for and influence their decisions with the right word at the right time. Let’s face it, bad copy or webpages are not only a turn off but are simply bad for business. If you notice your webstats are full of “Time on Page – 0 seconds” visits, it’s time to assess both the traffic you are receiving, and why it was that the reader didn’t stick around.
There is a vast quality difference between writers and writing styles. There is also a big difference in writing for print and web copy. If you are serious about your online business, make sure you recognise the difference. Use an author or copywriter that has experience in the your marketing program style. If its article marketing, use an expert author, if its web-copy, check out their websites. Here’s a few pointers on writing for the web :
1. Keep it short. If you start waffling, you confuse the reader and they loose interest. In the worst case, you could make the reader frustrated enough to comment or rate your work so that you loose credability.
2. Have clear article sections. Break up the copy with sub-headings if necessary so the reader can home in on what interests them. Keep the copy snappy and in a language that the target reader understands. Be clear, and break the article into question, answer, and what to do next.
3. Ask and answer the readers question. Ask yourself why the reader is looking for this information. If they area asking – “.. it itches, how can I make it stop?” – give the reader a solution to their problem. Make sure you have a “call to action”, so that the reader isn’t left wondering how to find or buy the miracle you are talking about.
As a last point, if you are going to use article marketing, a flood of duplicate articles may seem like a good idea to create backlinks, but quality writing stays around long after the duplicates drop off the internet index’s or are deleted. Original well written content will remain as a constant reference to search engines.
